Pinterest’s 2017 home design predictions

Making a New Year’s resolution to update your home décor? Pinterest just released its predictions for the top home fashion trends of 2017.

Their team dug through pins and data from the past year to see which top trends are emerging for 2017. Which will you incorporate into your living spaces?

Think outside the pot! Lush greenery that drapes and climbs on interior walls saw a 200% spike according to Pinterest’s study. With Pantone naming Greenery as the 2017 Color of the Year, plants are the perfect addition to your space.

Put plants along shelves or create an indoor trellis for a “living wall.” Vintage Revivals has a couple of ideas using peg boards as well as leather and wood.

A hanging plant recommendation: The pothos plant is a leafy vine that’s nearly impossible to kill.

Our designers have been telling us marble is making a comeback, particularly on furniture and countertops, but Pinterest’s study is also noticing it on wallpaper, citing a 303% increase in these pins.

Add a touch of elegance and luxury to a space by using a subtle marble wallpaper design or go bold and elaborate to make a statement wall your artwork for the space. Check out some of the inspiring marble walls we found on Interiorzine.

Nothing groundbreaking about nightstands, right? Pinterest cited a 721% push in pins for uniquely constructed nightstands for the New Year.

They’re great for storing all your essentials as well as showcasing accent décor. Nighstands with open shelves create easy access storage even while you’re lounging in bed.

We found some nightstand DIY inspirations like this contemporary hairpin nightstand, or try making a nightstand out of crates for a rustic look.

Danish for living simply, Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is all about being cozy and unfussy. And let’s face it, after a stressful day at work, who wouldn’t want to come home to a mini oasis.

Calming, clean colors coupled with cozy fabric textures and warm wood finishes serve as the base of your Hygge base. Add heirloom items for décor and a belly basket to store essentials like blankets, toys and even towels.

Remember, Hygge is all about living simply. Use it as an excuse to keep electronics out of the room too.

Copper is a trend that’s been around, and it’s clearly not going anywhere based off of the 90% increase Pinterest saw in the past year.

Add a small copper accent to enhance your space, like copper pendant lights or copper faceted hurricanes for candles or terrariums.

Add a ceiling fan featuring copper like our Ronan (available in black and white) to serve as a centerpiece to your room while adding a pop of the metal.

Navy is the new black! Add a pop of color to a white and minimal room with moody navys and deep blue hues. Blues in home décor had an 80% jump in pins according to Pinterest.

Paint cabinets or an accent wall navy, or keep your space light by adding the color subtly to your walls with wallpaper or tile featuring a blue accent design. How about swapping out the white subway tile popular in farmhouse decor for a colbalt or navy tile?

Navy velvet couches have become an elegant way to incorporate the trend into your home (it also looks nice on formal yet transitional tufted chairs).

Acrylic is back in a sleek and contemporary way. Pinterest saw a 50% spike in acrylic décor on Pinterest, particularly with coffee tables, trays and other accent décor in the clear material.

An acrylic chair in a mid-century modern shape provides a contemporary design while allowing you to see a desk with a cool color or design, and an acrylic coffee table lets you still see the patterned rug in your living room.

Try a clear bar cart that allows your barware to stand out. Combine two of Pinterest’s trends by adding copper barware to your acrylic bar cart.

Subway tiles have become quintessential of farmhouse interior design, but try wood tiles for the same rustic feel. You can even mix wood tile with a traditional minimalist tile for the a fresh farmhouse look.

Pinterest found 51% more pins for the wood tile trend in the past year.

Try using it in bathrooms to give it a cozy, cabin feel. We’ve spotted people using wood tiles on the floor and on the shower.

Our Donegan ceiling fans come in a variety of rustic blade finishes that would complement the wood tiling in your space.

Farmhouse interior design is still going strong with a 40% increase in pins during the past year according to Pinterest.

Wood elements are key to pulling off the rustic look in country-influenced homes as well as incorporating signage and heirloom pieces into the space.

We love how Blesser House created a whimsical farmhouse style playroom for her kids just in time for Christmas using wood paneling and our mint Cranbrook ceiling fan. As she says, “It’s like Dr. Seuss, Joanna Gaines, and Ralphie from A Christmas Story all threw a party in here.”

Heated floors saw a 54% rise in pins according to Pinterest’s study. Using concrete flooring can help preserve heat in your room. Adding insulation beneath tile is a must in cold weather (we’ve got more tips here for winterizing your home).
