It’s very important to make sure when buying a ceiling fan for your outdoor space that you’re choosing the correct ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories) or UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rating. If not, you will see technical difficulties with the fan.

The UL and ETL agencies break outdoor ceiling fans into two categories: wet-rated and damp-rated. It may seem confusing but we’re here to simplify it.

Here are a few tips on how to choose the outdoor ceiling fan to fit your outdoor space.

Wet-rated ceiling fans vs. damp-rated ceiling fans

Let’s break it down. Wet-rated ceiling fans can be used in outdoor spaces like pergolas that are exposed to harsh weather elements like heavy rain. Damp-rated ceiling fans can be used in covered patios and porches that are exposed to mild weather elements like humidity.

Hunter Fan Company has its own Research and Development Lab in Memphis, Tennessee, where we test our fan designs, finishes, and motors. Our engineers and innovators do twice the amount of agency required testing to make sure all our ceiling fans perform to our high standards.

Our outdoor ceiling fans, including our damp-rated fans, will go through tests to make sure the fan finish, blade finishes, and all of the fan components can withstand environmental elements it will experience in a covered outdoor structure.

The UV test ensures the fan and blade finishes won’t fade in the sun. The salt spray test makes sure the fan finishes and ceiling fan blade finishes stay adhered as well as test to make sure nothing on or in the fan rusts. We also put all of our ceiling fan blades through a “droop test” to make sure the blades don’t sag to the point that it doesn’t move enough air to keep you cool.

One of the tests our wet-rated ceiling fans specifically undergo is the rain test, where our engineers use high powered hoses to simulate the fan being rained on. During this test, the ceiling fan has nearly six bathtubs full of water poured on it!

Using outdoor ceiling fans inside

You cannot use an indoor ceiling fan in a covered outdoor space or an uncovered outdoor space. However, you can use outdoor ceiling fans inside! We actually encourage it!

We love the way the Cassius modern ceiling fan was used on the patio of the Southern Living Idea House 2018. Designer Meredith Ellis used two of these outdoor ceiling fans to create balance in the design. It’s also perfect for keeping people cool during the Texas summers and for keeping the pesky bugs away! Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper used the same outdoor ceiling fan, but inside: She placed the Cassius in a bedroom as a part of a clean industrial home transformation.

The noble bronze Seahaven outdoor ceiling fan with the beadboard inspired fan body is a great design for southern patios. It also complements shiplap and dark hardware finishes found in farmhouse kitchens. The integrated LED light on the Seahaven is perfect for patio lighting during parties as well as complementing recessed kitchen lighting.

Because our outdoor ceiling fans are tested to withstand moisture and humidity, it makes them perfect for garages and bathrooms. Use a bathroom ceiling fan for extra light and to keep it cool while you’re using the hairdryer. Install a garage ceiling fan to stay cool while you work in your garage workshop.
