A modern Boho nursery combines bohemian and mid-century modern styles for a playful yet calm and natural design. Perfect for a nursery, and exactly what new parents Sarah and Brad wanted for their baby girl.
For this Huntervention®, we blended Brad’s mid-century modern style with Sarah’s Bohemian style to create a modern Boho nursery that will transition as their baby girl grows up. The colors and playful patterns in modern Boho design are whimsical enough for kids but also easily adaptable as they grow up and their tastes change (and they can change a lot).
Nursery ceiling fan ideas
A Huntervention is a weekend refresh of a space: painting walls, adding some small pieces of new furniture, and a ceiling fan. Things to help freshen up the space!
“It’s really important to keep in mind a budget and we’re doing that by incorporating existing pieces, some hand-me-down-pieces that we’re refurbishing and giving a little revival to – painting the handles, painting the dresser – and then incorporating new pieces to really bring their styles together,” said Claire McRoberts, Designer at Hunter Fan Company.
Sarah and Brad recently moved into a new house, and the nursery room definitely needed a fresh coat of paint and a new light fixture. The existing rustic light fixture and tan paint made the room seem small and dark. A nursery ceiling fan with LED light would help illuminate the space while keeping them cool.
Sarah read an article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) about ceiling fans helping reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by 72 percent, so it was important for them to include a nursery ceiling fan in their design. Brad also wanted a nursery ceiling fan that had controls that would be easy to use during middle-of-the-night diaper changes. Along with functionality, they wanted a ceiling fan that matched their styles.
“A nursery ceiling fan is important to us because we’ve seen the studies that show having a ceiling fan in the nursery helps reduce the risk of SIDS. We also just want to keep air circulating in the room, and we think a ceiling fan is a really pretty light fixture,” said Sarah.
Creating the modern Boho nursery
Sarah wanted to incorporate more colors than just pink into their baby girl’s nursery. We went with a multicolor Bohemian style rug and applied those colors throughout the room with pillows, blankets, and picture frames. Natural toned textiles like woven shelves and leather handles on the storage bins added depth and texture to other modern elements in the room like the white bookcase and mid-century style crib.
McRoberts chose the Hepburn modern ceiling fan in Satin Copper for this nursery design. The fan blends vintage flair with modern touches for a unique and approachable design that was perfect for this modern Boho nursery.
“We are mixing different finishes in the space: Since we’re going with a Mid-Century Modern look and we’re using the Satin Copper Hepburn, we’re combining warm metals of copper and brass throughout the space. That’s also going to play on some of the pinks we’re using in the space,” said McRoberts.
Brad was especially a fan of the wall control, noting that it’s easy to adjust the fan speed and light dimming right as he walks into the room.
Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams on the walls and updated white trim and doors brightened up the room right away. Tip: When you repaint a room and trim, make sure to update the outlets and covers as well as vents to coordinate.
We repainted the dark brown dresser and the hardware to give it a fresh look. Fusion™ Mineral Paint made it easy to repaint the dresser with quick sanding beforehand; no topcoat afterwards. The Casement color was a soft white that looked great in the room and complemented the champagne color we spray painted the hardware. This furniture also serves a dual purpose in the room: Storage and changing table!
The new parents wanted textiles in the room that were washable in case of accidents that can occur with babies. We picked out an ottoman that could be easily wiped down and used pillows with removable covers that could be thrown in the washing machine.
